Manufacturer Desfossé & Karth
495,00 €
Dating from the Art Deco period, this panoramic wallpaper comes from the Musée des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. Designed by Henri Stephany and manufactured by the Parisian factory Desfossé & Karth in 1925, it represents a landscape composed of filiform trees, stylized leaves and elegant characters. We find the whole style of Roaring Twenties in this decor: sobriety, clean lines, simplicity of natural shapes, elegance, use of gold and luxurious materials...
To bring new life and modernity to this wallpaper, our workshop then carried out a meticulous digital restoration. This very precious version is printed on a gold leaf wallpaper, entirely handmade. For printing, a backing white is applied before the colors are printed, which gives the patterns a beautiful lacquered effect. Fragile, this wallpaper requires professional hanging.

Founded in 1851, the Jules Desfossé workshop is one of the most important in France and Europe. In 1853, after Jules Desfossé had joined with Hippolyte Karth, the Manufacture was named Desfossé and Karth. It distinguishes itself by a purchase policy of printing woodblocks and a close collaboration with the artists of the time. Firmly rooted in the Second Empire, and considered the best, this Manufacture offers wall papers with themes in the taste of time, though sometimes nearly decadent.
1925
The name of this Art Deco panoramic wallpaper ("Orpheus Garden") echoes the fascination that the Orpheus myth exerted on artists of the period, from Jean Cocteau with his play "Orphée" (and later his film "Le testament d'Orphée") to Stravinsky with his ballet "Orpheus", via Robert and Sonia Delaunay with the sets and costumes they created for the ballet "Orphée". Art Deco not only emphasized elegance and stylization, but also revisited mythology and ancient themes. Orpheus, an ancient but timeless figure, offered a theme conducive to refined, geometric and luminous compositions - in keeping with the quest for universal, decorative beauty.
The original wallpaper (originally created in yellow and blue) was designed by Henri Stephany in 1925. At the time, this painter is specialized in the creation of wallpaper patterns (in particular for the Desfossé & Karth manufacture)and sketches for the creation of Art Deco furniture (notably for the famous decorator and designer Ruhlmann), blending stylized geometry and floral inspirations, emblematic of the aesthetics of the 1920s-1930s. In addition to the stylization of nature, he excelled, particularly in this panoramic wallpaper, in the stylization of spindly female figures with boyish hairstyles, elegantly engaged in a variety of activities (languid poses, boating, etc. - see photo opposite). Stéphany's precision of design and sense of ornamental rhythm helped make wallpaper an art form in its own right in the modern interiors of the interwar period.
Due to its artisanal manufacture, this gold leaf wallpaper is very fragile and requires hanging by a professional. Our wallpapers are hung in 3 stages: the preparation of the wall, its pasting, and the hanging. The strips are hung edge to edge and from left to right in the order indicated on the assembly plan supplied with the rolls. To find out more, consult our Hanging instructions page.
Handmade with real gold leaf laid on a base of non-woven wallpaper, gold leaf wallpaper is precious, fragile and not washable.
