Wallpaper anthracite Toile de Jouy . 1790-1800

Founded in 1760 (under the reign of Louis XV) by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, the Jouy manufacturer became, in the 18th century, one of the most important manufacturers of Indiennes, oriental cotton fabrics with bright colors and floral patterns imported to Europe. It was implanted in Jouy-en-Josas (Yvelines, France) for its proximity to the Versailles court and for its location on the banks of the Bièvre river, whose chemical qualities were suitable to washing canvases. Tapestries, furnishing fabrics, clothing making, the nobles of France and around the world adore this refined canvas. At the beginning of the 19th century, the factory became the third largest in France, employing nearly 1,300 workers and thus allowing France to compete with England on the textile market. After Oberkampf's death in 1815, his son inherited the family business, but faced with increasing competition, the factory eventually closed in 1843.
